Mike and his wife Jean live in Christian County in the village of Edinburg and attend the Methodist Church there. They have two adult children, Brian and Jason. Jean is a teacher in the Edinburg School District. Mike’s grandmother lived in Decatur and spent her career working at Linn and Scruggs department store. His family farm is near Decatur in Douglas County.
Mike is a retired educator from the Illinois Department of Corrections, Logan CC. He is a 35 year career educator in both public and correctional education. He has been actively involved in local, county and state issues most of his life. Mike has exhibited the leadership skills necessary to make a difference in state government.
As a candidate for State Representative, Mike feels Illinois government must live within its means, attract and retain jobs and adequately fund education. He believes any public employee pension reform must be constitutional and fair to everyone.
Mike is a gun owner who will defend the 2nd Amendment.
Mike will be accessible to all people.
Teaching in the public schools, correctional facilities and currently serving as Vice President of the local school board, Mike Bell understands firsthand the adverse effects of prison overcrowding and underfunded schools. Additionally, he was co-founder of the “Save Our School Committee” successfully transforming the Edinburg School from closing to fiscally sound and adding new programs.
Serving on the local and county economic development board has given Mike unique experience in attracting and retaining business and jobs to Edinburg and Christian County.
As a retired public employee, Mike Bell has helped lead the fight to retain current public and employee pensions through his active involvement with AFSCME and IEA unions.
Mike serves as co-chairman of the Project 29 Committee and is responsible for advocating the completion of a new four lane high around Edinburg. Along with holding monthly meetings, he is assisting in the establishment of a new gas station, a fast food eatery and other businesses.
Growing up on a farm and driving a truck each summer taught Mike the value of hard work and responsibility.
To achieve the goals for his community and county, Mike has learned to successfully work with local, county and state government officials.
